Providers’ Panel: The Changing Role of the Provider in an Evolving Industry Between the perfect storm of the financial system collapse, the drying up of credit markets, and major changes to life expectancy tables, providers have had a challenging time of it over the past year or so. We’re starting to see some green shoots, but it remains to be seen whether they will grow. The economy is slowly recovering, though liquidity issues remain. Fraud continues to be a concern and public perception of the industry could stand some polishing. The specter of increased regulation could create new barriers to entry. As the industry matures and moves into its next phase, what will drive growth, and how will the role of the provider evolve?

The Case for Consumer-Driven Industry Reform
In the aftermath of the financial crisis some form of federal oversight of the insurance industry seems inevitable. Some view regulatory reform as burdensome, while others recognize the opportunity to increase consumer confidence by increasing their protections. For reform to be meaningful it must start with the consumer. How can reforms be crafted that will benefit the consumer and position the industry for growth? Is there a meaningful difference between how reforms can be crafted versus what reforms should be crafted?

Securitizations of Life Settlements: What are the Risks?
Securitizations of life settlements have received quite a bit of press lately but, beyond the hype, what should investors be concerned with? There are many risks, including a limited history of successful transactions, the potential for fraud, tight credit markets, and low volumes of policies available for securitization. In addition to these, there’s the risk that information on insureds’ health could be inaccurate, negatively impacting returns. On top of that, investment banks might not fully understand just how complicated the process really is. To help us separate risks from hype, a top analyst shares his company’s methodology.
